For the past year, I have been working with Apprenticeship Illinois and local partners (including Parkland College Champaign County EDC Champaign County Chamber of Commerce Champaign Public Library Illinois Department of Human Services Illinois Department of Employment Security Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity Champaign County Regional Planning Commission Illinois Small Business Development Center at Champaign County EDC - CUSBDC Tuscola Chamber & Economic Development and others) to discuss how we can better serve employers using a collaborative model in a regional ecosystem. When I saw that NAWDP was hosting a "business services academy" that is promoting ideas similar to what we are discussing locally - collaboration within an ecosystem, business teams of cross-organization service providers, business engagement, etc. - I had to check it out. Looking forward to benchmarking our local work against national best practices.

At NAWDP conference. Maryland passed legislation a couple years ago that provides funding for additional career coaches at American Job Centers (who are overseen by local workforce boards) and requires all high school students to work with a career coach to do career planning. At National Association of Workforce Development Professionals (NAWDP)Business Services Academy. First breakout session this morning is promoting good jobs, which is what our local workforce board is focused on. In fact, we are collaborating with Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunitythis year on a “quality jobs” pilot. Looking forward to the session.Illinois Workforce PartnershipApprenticeship Illinois

At National Association of Workforce Development Professionals (NAWDP)Business Services Academy in the registered apprenticeship break out session. A workforce board on the border of DC uses the bold model that businesses are the customer, workers are the product, and communities are the manufacturer.

Listening to a presenter at NAWDP Business Services Academy. From their view, traditionally, "work readiness" in workforce development meant the local workforce board would work with employers to identify in-demand jobs and then provide upskilling opportunities to workers. Now the innovation to "work readiness" is for local areas to take a look at their demographic data, develop alternative ways to improve labor market participation, and work in communities with education, economic development, and other stakeholders. That is what we have been trying to do in my local area, so it seems like we are on the right track. Still more to learn about “work ready communities” and how it’s different from the work keys stuff from a decade or so ago.National Association of Workforce Development Professionals (NAWDP) Illinois Workforce Partnership

At the National Association of Workforce Development Professionals (NAWDP) Business Services Academy. Today's breakout sessions align with a lot of the work we are doing in my LWIA and our state:-Embracing a holistic approach to business services in the workforce ecosystem-Registered apprenticeships: an employer pipeline solution -Pathways to prosperity: enhancing employer outcomes with historically underemployed populations -Understanding WIOA performance measures for business engagement At the reception last night, I met workforce development professionals from workforce boards, county government, community colleges, and contracted service providers, and they were from all over the country (California, Wisconsin, New Jersey, Louisiana, to name a few). Looking forward to learning from colleagues. Apprenticeship Illinois Illinois Workforce Partnershiphttps://www.nawdp.org/
