Statesman Journal from Salem, Oregon (2024)

20, Statesman Journal Salem, Wednesday, June 17, 1981 dog racing scoreboard Senators pick 26 players for '8 1 team Snyder's CBS days must end soon opinion By GARY DEEB Syndicated writer The parade has passed Jimmy "the Greek" Snvder bv, and the sooner the bosses of CBS Sports realize that indisputable fact, the better for everybody -especially the millions of sports fans who are forced to endure the Greek's breathtaking foolishness on television. As mentioned in this column previous ly, the Greek, a one-time Las Vegas gambling Kingpin, has degenerated into a hotheaded, funky old man who wears a lot of neck chains and walks around picking verbal and physical fights with anybody he disagrees with. AT 63, JIMMY has become a very bad joke. He bills himself as a sports betting expert, and yet any worthwhile gambler will tell you that the Greek's "grapevine" reports are usually either flat-out inaccurate or comprised of stale and trivial news. The Greek clearly has reached the point where his information is of minimal use to a sports fan, particularly when compared with the gambling-oriented contributions of Pete Axthelm during the football season on rival NBC.

But besides the wrongheaded or unim portant tidbits he serves up on CBS, the Greek's very personality has become an issue that seems certain to lead to his downfall at that network. LAST FALL, you'll recall, he demonstrated his manhood by tossing a sneak punch at fellow CBS broadcaster Brent Musburger. Brent never saw the blow coming, probably because he was sitting down while the Greek was standing alongside him. A couple of weeks later, Jimmy again displayed his toughness by telling another CBS cohort, Phyllis George, that he despises her husband, Kentucky Gov. John Y.

Brown; Phyllis responded by bursting into tears. This low-rent behavior so disgusted Van Gordon Sauter, the president of CBS Sports, that he began making plans to get nd of the Greek by the time the next football season rolls around. By REID ENGLISH Of the Statesman-Journal Ten pitchers were among 26 players named Tuesday night to the 1981 Salem Senators baseball team. The entire squad was announced by Larry Himes, director of scouting for the California Angels, the supplier of players for the Salem team. Players signed by the Angels for two squads, Salem and Idaho Falls, have been practicing since Saturday at West-em Oregon State College in Monmouth. The Idaho Falls team, composed of first-year professionals not chosen for the Senators, will leave Salem Thursday to begin preparations for play in the Pioneer League. The teams will play an eight-inning practice game at 1 p.m.

today at WOSC. "The kids need to play in a competitive situation," said Salem manager Rick In-galls. The Angels' staff was hoping to stage the game under the lights at the Senators' normal home, Chemeketa Community College, but that field is already being used. Pitcher Tim Kammeyer from Eugene and Southern California is the only player on the Salem roster with an Oregon connection, lngalls mentioned last week that two former Western Oregon players, Tony Stearns and Dan Johnson, would get tryouts. It never occurred.

Himes said the Angels had more than enough players for the Salem club. "The roster is bulging and the opportunities are not available," said Himes. "It has been so difficult to hold tryouts under the circ*mstances." Himes referred to the rainy weather and wet field at Chemeketa, which has caused the teams to practice in Monmouth. lngalls said Tuesday's practice was excellent because of what was accomplished considering the unplayable field. "We had a great session today," he said.

"We stayed indoors, had a classroom (meeting) in the morning, and split into groups in the afternoon." Himes indicated there would be few roster changes at Salem and Idaho Falls. "There's always that possibility," he said, "but for the most part it would be if someone got hurt here rather than to move someone up. I'd just as soon keep them here for the two months. We'd like them to get acclimated to the job, travel and rules." Six pitchers and outfielder Tim Pain-ten are the only players on the Salem roster with pro experience, that being one year of rookie ball. The rest are first-year pro athletes.

As a result, Himes didn't want to comment on who might be a potential star. "It is not our judgement to make an evaluation," he said. "We have been looking at them and then decide where we feel they be most successful." As expected, 18-year-old shortstop Dick Schofield will be sent to Idaho Falls. Schofield was the Angels' top pick and third overall in last week's free agent draft. The player chosen the highest from that draft who is on the Salem club is Lonnie Garza, a shortstop from Pan American taken in the seventh round.

The Senators will continue practicing until the leave Monday for Walla Walla, where they will begin a 70-game season June 24. The first home game is July 1. Davis says move needed to keep up LOS ANGELES (AP) In professional football, the rich are getting richer and Al Davis is getting worried. Davis, the managing general partner of the Oakland Raiders, expressed his concern under cross examination Tuesday as part of an antitrust action by the Raiders and the Los Angeles Coliseum against the National Football League. "You have a disparity of wealth in the National Football League. It is going to grow unless it is stopped," Davis said under questioning by Patrick Lynch, attorney for the league. The Raiders and the Coliseum authority are suing the league because league owners will not permit Davis to move his team to Los Angeles.

Davis has said that one reason he wants to move into the Los Angeles area is that he could make more money there and keep his Super Bowl champion team competitive. Without the money to be earned in Los Angeles, Davis testified that he would not be able to field a winning team. Davis said he was worried that free agency will come to football, driving players' salaries even higher than they are now and making it even more important for him to earn more money. Davis said that high salaries don't produce winning football teams, but that the demand for high salaries will remain. "I don't think it is in the direction (football) should be going," said Davis, "but it is the direction It Is going in." sports programming would seem to add another nail to the Greek's coffin.

WELL, IF SALTER, Musburger Co. were looking for further excuses to bounce Jimmy, they certainly got a beauty last weekend when the Greek made a complete botch of his assignment as one of the reporters for CBS coverage of the Belmont Stakes, the final leg of the Triple Crow of thoroughbred horse racing. Standing in the paddock before the race, the Greek showed how little he knows of horse racing when he declared, in a mighty alarmed tone of voice, that Pleasant Colony, the favorite, was perspiring profusely because of the pressure of his upcoming attempt to notch the Triple Crown. It took commentator Frank Wright, a horse trainer by trade, to correct Jimmy and patiently explain that Pleasant Colony's sweating was caused simply by the hot temperatures and muggy air, and that the lead weights stashed into his saddle also probably contributed somewhat to the problem. The Greek's performance went down hill from there, hitting ground zero in a non-interview with Johnny Campo just after the race.

SO HERE WE HAVE this over-the-hill Vegas hustler who damages the CBS football coverage with his penny-ante comments every Sunday afternoon dur ing the autumn; ho can't even get along with his co-workers; who placed a dis tant second to NBC's Axthelm last sea son in the dispensing of gambling-related football info; and who nearly singlehan dedly ruins the telecast of one of his net work's prize events the Belmont Stakes. The solution is so obvious that it goes without saying. The only question is how long it'll take CBS Sports chief Sauter to locate the flusher and yank it. S-J file photo by Associated Press Breathtaking foolishness from the school for trips never taken. He also is accused of giving money illegally to at least nine football players.

Mason, six former assistant coaches and a one-time American Airlines ticket agent were indicted last year by a state grand jury, accused of having received more than $13,000 fraudulently. Healy contended Tuesday that the figure involving Mason is only about $2,100.
